University Outreach Programs for Health & Wellbeing: Community Impact and Initiatives

3.3.2 Does your university as a body deliver outreach programs and projects in the local community (which can include student volunteering programs) to improve or promote health & wellbeing including hygiene, nutrition, family planning, sports, exercise, aging well, and other health and wellbeing related topics?

Commitment of Ahlia University to the Community Engagement:

Ahlia University Community Engagement Plan (2021-2025)

This plan, like the one before it, has as its underpinning AU’s vision in which the university strives to make a positive contribution to the development of the Bahraini community and by extension the wider Gulf region through its three core functions of Teaching and Learning, Research and Community Engagement. AU’s Community Engagement Plan 2021-2025’ is a continuation but strengthening of its Community EMPOWER Plan 2016-2020. It was deemed necessary to review and revise the current plan earlier as AU has a new strategic plan coming into effect in 2021. AU’s Community Engagement Plan (2021-2025) is derived from a number of national and international strategies to maintain the highest quality and academic standards in relation to Community Engagement and Social Responsibility.

Community Engagement Plan Aims:

         To enforce social responsibility and to serve the local and regional community.

         To further encourage and enhance participative community-based research which supports social and economic development.

         To Strengthen the university's community relationships through cooperation and support of planned extension programs and services.

         To provide budding entrepreneurs with skills and knowledge, as well as support through mentoring to successfully translate business ideas into viable business ventures.

 

Initiative 1:

Support and encourage students in a culture of engagement, entrepreneurship and innovation and prepare them by providing support through mentoring and partnerships to become leaders in their chosen professions.

         Create a culture of awareness among learners about the importance of entrepreneurship for the growth of economy by fostering entrepreneurship at the university and community at large.

         Providing experiential learning opportunities, conducting meaningful entrepreneurial research, and connecting students with mentors and resources that enable them to successfully start up a new business and prosper.

         Provide Entrepreneurship related courses to support, educate, coach and encourage young entrepreneurs to pursue business opportunities and succeed in transforming them into viable start-ups.

         Link the academic life with the business world through training, incubation, research and consultation.

         Create partnerships with local and regional industries, and small and medium enterprises will be involved to support budding entrepreneurs.

         Conduct events, seminars, lectures, conferences to promote entrepreneurship across the institution.

Ahlia University strives to achieve excellence in all aspects of its community engagement activities.’ Towards this end, in 2018/19 Ahlia created a Community Engagement Unit in order to enhance the management, monitoring and reporting of all community engagement activities, which in turn would maximize the impact of these activities across all stakeholders and strata of society.’ The support and coordination of the colleges, deanships and directorates allows the proper implementation of our community engagement plan with the aim of contributing positively in the development and prosperity of the community.

Community Engagement at Ahlia University is the process where students, faculty, staff, alumni and community organizations exchange information, resources and make referrals for community service and further learning opportunities. Community engagement activities form the third of Ahlia’s core functions.

For this reason, our Strategic Plan is underpinned by a Community Empowerment Plan and our activities are wide ranging, aimed at our internal and external communities.

-We offer programs meeting the needs of students, employers in the Kingdom.

-We support good causes and encourage volunteering and other activities that allow students to learn about civic duty and global citizenship.

-We work towards making our high-quality education accessible to all qualified applicants through scholarships, grants, and tuition remission schemes.

- Our research is outward-facing and geared to needs of our society.’

In 2018/19, Ahlia University organized and participated in a total of 90 community engagement activities, which means an average of more than 2 activities per week, across the first semester, second semester, and summer session.

The students, faculty, and staff of AU are deeply networked with communities. AU’s community engagement activities reflect the decentralized nature of the university.’ Deanship of Student Affairs enriches students’ campus life and community engagement by providing services and supports at the different stages in the student life at AU. Through the collaboration of various University colleges and departments as well as the student council, the University encourages student participation in the AU community engagement projects. These units also act as a go-to hub for connecting students to the resources and opportunities that will help students broaden their perspectives in ethical and social issues through community engagement activities and make the most of the student time at AU and in Bahrain.

One of AU’s core values which is essential to the achievement of its vision and mission is the Social Responsibility. Health and Wellbeing

The health and wellbeing of the students and staff is an important element of sustainability at Ahlia University. Students can access a myriad of services to support their mental and physical health and help them lead balanced lives here at Ahlia University. The University provides student counseling, academic advising, special services for students with special needs. Furthermore, Ahlia University provides and supports a variety of student social, cultural, and sports activities through a specialized directorate within the Deanship of Student Affairs. The Directorate of Student Activities also provides other student services such as student accommodation; internship and training; career counseling; and supporting the election of the students’ representatives in the Student Council. Moreover, the Human Resources Directorate arranges many activates to help staff lead healthy lives. Staff can spruce up their workspaces and bring a bit of nature to their desks thanks which affordable plants and plant care workshops to AU’s community.

This includes a strong focus on Entrepreneurship, Mentoring and Partnerships; Outreach, widening access and lifelong learning; and Expertise sharing through Research. To this end AU continuously seeks to strengthen positive, mutually beneficial relationships with business, industry, government, social organizations and the wider civic community. In this way AU optimizes the opportunities for all involved to lead more fulfilling and prosperous lives.

The Bahraini Schools and Universities Sports Union announced the participation of Bahraini universities in the International University Sports Festival, which will be held in Yekaterinburg, Russia. This participation is part of the Kingdom of Bahrain's commitment to enhancing cultural and sports cooperation at regional and international levels.

Mr. Mohammed Ashouri, who serves as the head of the Bahraini delegation participating in the festival, expressed his delight at this valuable opportunity. He stated, "We are grateful for this wonderful opportunity to represent our kingdom's universities at this prominent international sports festival. This event provides an opportunity to showcase our commitment to promoting international cooperation and knowledge exchange in the fields of sports and education."

The participating universities under the umbrella of the Bahraini Schools and Universities Sports Union include the University of Bahrain, Bahrain Polytechnic, Bahrain Medical University, and the British University. The festival will feature various sports, including volleyball, boxing, swimming, and taekwondo.

The festival aims to enhance communication and knowledge exchange between the participating universities, Russian universities, and other international institutions. It seeks to strengthen global cultural and academic ties. This participation is expected to expand the prospects for cooperation and knowledge exchange in the fields of sports, education, and competition.

Mr. Ashouri added, "We are extremely excited to participate in this international festival and look forward to making effective contributions and building new bridges of sports and academic cooperation with universities worldwide. Providing financial support for its management

Ahlia University students provided financial support to Yoko Parents’ Care Home, within the framework of the social responsibility programs adopted by the university.

Ahlia University’s Participation in the 15th Inter College Environmental Public Speaking Competition, organized by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG).’[16]

The Inter College Environmental Public Speaking Competition was held for the first time in 2001 and since then has proven to be highly popular across the GCC region. Its primary aim is to ensure sustainability of environmental resources by promoting a positive attitude change among the young in our societies and establishing an environmentally-conscious generation. The 2015 cycle was held on November 23rd - 24th 2016 at Dubai Knowledge Village. Fifty-seven teams representing Gulf universities, colleges of higher and further education participated in the competition.

On November 16, a ceremony was held at the Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Park in Awali marking World Diabetes Day which falls on the 14th of November’[20].

The SCH chief addressed the ceremony marking World Diabetes Day, being held this year under the theme: ’Family and Diabetes’. He stressed the crucial role of the family in promoting prevention from the disease. He warned against the alarming increase of the prevalence of diabetes in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which has health, social and economic repercussions on the community and threatens national sustainable development, where the Ahlia students participated.

The ’A’ Activity Credit [23]

Ahlia University appreciates the value of co-curricular activities in developing a range of skills and attributes that plays an important role in molding student’s personality and building confidence and self-esteem. Undergraduate students participating in co-curricular activities are awarded an ’A’ credit to encourage them in participation beyond the classroom. The ’A’ activity credit is a one credit hour with ’A’ grade awarded to students in reference to their participation in a wide variety of activities outside of the regular classroom. The ’A’ activity credit is awarded to students in reference to a wide variety of extracurricular activities that include but not limited to:

a. Demonstrating an active role in university student clubs, scientific student associations and student council.

b. Participation in university sport activities and competitions.

c. Organizing/participating in university events.

d. Attending workshops, seminars and conferences approved by the college or Deanship of student affairs.

e. Volunteer work and Community Engagement

f. Involvement in cultural activities.

g. Peer tutoring sessions.

Students from the Mass Communications & PR programme attended a conference at the Sofitel and met HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, His Majesty the King’s representative for Charity Works & Youth Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth & Sports. Students learnt the importance of volunteering and charitable giving. Social responsibility is of great importance to Ahlia University and teaching our students how to become involved is a critical part of the student experience.

International Sustainability Conferences 2009 and 2017’[26]

The theme of 2017 conference is ’Digital revolution, smart cities and performance improvement towards a sustainable knowledge-based inclusive development ’. Central to the forum were the challenges faced by countries within the MENA region. The rapid urbanization within the region were found to be leaning towards the development of smart cities, clearly exhibiting the governments’ ’ particularly that of Saudi Arabia’s ’ recognition and consideration of the importance of the role of technology and the youth in their states’ future. Downward trends in oil prices have posed a serious barrier to this development, thus solutions to securing the economy and income in oil and gas export dependent states were also explored. The urgency of income and wealth inequalities was also revisited, which called for further radical reform in regulation and policy to better address the welfare, and macro- and micro-level challenges that have arose.

Ahlia University Invention Centre (AIC) in cooperation with Brinc Batelco, is organizing The first Ahlia Invention Centre hackathon all innovators in Bahrain, would love to invite all the Inventors and Innovators in Bahrain to participate in the ’We invent’ themed hackathon. which aims to:

         Discover and enhance the talents and abilities of Bahraini innovators and enable them to become professionals in the technical fields according to the best international standards.

         Motivate Bahraini innovators to join the field of software development and program design.

         Develop Bahraini innovators students’ technical skills to create smart solutions that simulate the latest events in the world.

         Deploy the field of designing and developing applications and inventions to benefit the Advancement of Bahraini innovators.

Hackathon Guidelines

         Teams must have a maximum of 4 members, one member at least should be an Ahlia Univesity student.

         All team members should be present at the event.

         Teams can of course gain advice and support from Ahlia University faculty team, and others.

         All work on a project should be done at the hackathon.

         Teams can work on ideas that have already been done.

         Adding new features to existing projects is allowed.

         Teams can use libraries, frameworks, or open-source code in their projects.

Important Dates

         Registration will start on Thursday 3 March 2022

         Submission will close on Monday 15 March 2022

         Hackathon 3 days will start on 15 until 17 March 2022

         Final ceremony (winners’ announcement) 17 March 2022

We Invent Hackathon (2022) - Ahlia University’[28]

Ahlia Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE) attempts to conduct activities in order to widen the students’ knowledge of entrepreneurship, inspire them to think and act entrepreneurially, educate them through new learning styles, in addition to connecting embryonic entrepreneurs with the successful fellows in this fieldwork.

Workshops:
The aim of the workshops held at the center is to spread the culture of entrepreneurship and innovation among participants. Indeed, these workshops provide good opportunities for the trainees to explore their inner entrepreneurs while engaged in entrepreneurial discussions and activities.

Training:
Training sessions will be conducted by the center trainers’ applying the knowledge gained from the Entrepreneurship and Leadership CIPE (Center of International Private Enterprises, UAS) Workshop’s using the CIPE-WDI curricula. http://wdi.umich.edu/entrepreneurship-development-center/people/

Best Business Idea Competitions:

As part of ACE activities, several competitions of the best business idea have been organized. Groups of students compete along the semester to get the prize of the best business idea. The competition comprises 3 phases:

2nd round: the selection of the 3 best ideas

3rd round: the selection of the best business plan.

Outside visits:

As part of the center’s activities, groups of students visit incubator centers and accelerators. These visits give the students a good overview about the services offered by the incubators and accelerators to novice entrepreneurs.
