Chairperson of Architecture Engineering at UAE University: “Cultural identity is not about imitating the past, but understanding and re-inventing it.”

The International Conference on “Inspiration and Innovative Design Trends,” hosted by Ahlia University, provided a platform for insightful discussions on the intersection of culture, identity, and architectural design. Among the notable speakers was Professor Kheira Anissa Thabet, Chairperson of the Architecture Engineering Department at the United Arab Emirates University, who spoke about the importance of understanding and reinterpreting cultural identity in modern architectural practices.

In her keynote speech, Professor Thabet highlighted the close relationship between culture, identity, behavior, and the environment, asserting that these elements serve as foundational pillars that significantly influence architectural design. She stressed that contemporary challenges necessitate innovative approaches to cultural identity, advocating for a balance between tradition and future aspirations.

“Cultural identity should not be about the literal imitation of the past but rather about understanding and creatively reinventing it,” stated Professor Thabet. She illustrated her point by discussing the potential of traditional architectural elements, such as turbines and central courtyards, to be developed using modern tools and techniques. These designs can enhance performance to meet contemporary climatic and social demands.

Professor Thabet also underscored the significant impact of architectural design on human behavior. She emphasized the need for creating gathering spaces and green areas that promote social connectivity and a sense of belonging.

Prof. Thabet also noted the availability of advanced tools that enable designers to improve the environmental performance of their designs before they are executed. “With the aid of advanced materials and artificial intelligence technologies, we can conduct intelligent simulations and data analyses to develop designs that strike a balance between efficiency and sustainability,” she explained.

Concluding her remarks, Professor Thabet stressed that the future of architecture requires an ambitious vision that merges cultural heritage with modern technologies. This vision aims to create smart, resilient cities that respond to climate and social needs. She called for enhanced collaboration among architects, educators, practitioners, institutions, and governments, highlighting the major role of students in these efforts.
