Collaboration with international universities to address the fields of sustainability and future studies:
https://www.ahlia.edu.bh/cms4/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Brunel-Brochure.pdf
Brunel University London is very pleased to have a close partnership with Ahlia University, which allows students in the Gulf region to undertake a Brunel PhD with supervision and training given by our academic members of staff. We are glad that this gives students the ability to study and research for a UK degree, while based in Bahrain, and proud of the success of the graduates from the programme.
Ahlia, in affiliation with Brunel, has made important strides in the area of research through this programme in this region.
Our rationale for the PhD without residence is simple:
Brunel is a well-established, research-led university with an international reputation whereas Ahlia is a young, visionary institution with research being an integral part of our policy and philosophy. One of the main benefits of the PhD without residence is of course that it offers someone who is unable to travel the chance of researching and achieving a PhD in Bahrain.
The benefits for Bahrain and the Middle East as a whole go wider. In my opinion, we have not been very good at addressing some of the problems we face in the Middle East and I believe university research can definitely make a contribution. We are therefore delighted to be working alongside such a well-known research-led university and we consider our partnership to be an excellent example of genuine collaboration between the Middle East and the West which will serve the interests of our region. I am confident that the programme will expand and we will be able to offer PhDs in other areas of research.
https://www.ahlia.edu.bh/programs/brunel-university-london-phd-without-residence/
Brunel University London strategically partnered with Ahlia University in 2005 to offer the PhD without Residence Program in Information Systems, Computing, Mathematics, and Business and Management studies. The program was envisioned to attract students from the GCC region (Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, and Qatar), where a significant number of people strive to gain British standard degrees but are unable to travel to the UK to study on full-time basis and/or are unable to bear the high cost of living in the UK. The program does not require students to go to the Brunel University London to study, however, attendance at Brunel is required for the Viva Voce defense at the end of the final year. Students are, however, welcome to visit Brunel whenever they wish throughout the course of their PhD.
The aim of the PhD (WR) is translated to Intended Outcomes that are mapped and successfully aligned to Bahrain NQF level 10:’’
’ LO1: The creation and interpretation of new knowledge, through original research or other advanced scholarship, of a quality to satisfy peer review, extend the forefront of the discipline, and merit publication.
’ LO2: A systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge which is at the forefront of an academic discipline or area of professional practice.
’ LO3: The general ability to conceptualise, design and implement a project for the generation of new knowledge, applications or understanding at the forefront of the discipline, and to adjust project design in the light of unforeseen problems.
’ LO4: A detailed understanding of applicable techniques for research and advanced academic enquiry.

The curriculum of the EMSE Master of Science degree program requires 11 graduate level courses totaling 36 credit hours. Two types of course requirements are included in the master’s curriculum-core course requirements and focus course requirements, including a research dissertation. Core course requirements are taken by all students in the EMSE master’s degree program. Focus course requirements address specialized topics that, as a whole, provide the level of detail necessary for management proficiency in particular engineering environments.
The field of Engineering Management with focus in Engineering and Technology Management (E&TM) bridges the gap between engineering and management. It involves the overall management of organizations oriented to manufacturing, construction, engineering, technology or production. E&TM enables engineers to function more effectively in the business environment. An M.S. degree in engineering management provides a technical-based alternative to a traditional M.B.A. program. Practitioners specialize in such areas as management of technology, product and process, quality, organizational management, operations management, program management or marketing and finance.
Students applying for the master’s degree program in Engineering Management must meet the current entrance requirements of the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). Ideal candidates for the programs will meet the following requirements.
Minimum grade point average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or higher in the last two years of undergraduate study.
Grade of C or better in the two college calculus courses ’ this is a prerequisite to all graduate programs in the EMSE department. Applicants who do not meet this requirement in full but are otherwise qualified may be conditionally admitted and required to take an additional 3-credit hour course, EMSE 4197 ’ Special Topics: Quantitative Methods in Engineering Management, during the first year of graduate study at Ahlia University. If required, EMSE 4197 counts as the 12th course and the student’s program the requires 39 credit hours.
Received a bachelor’s degree in engineering, a physical science, mathematics, computer science, business administration, or information technology for a regionally accredited institution.
Note: GW considers a candidate’s entire background and all submitted materials when reaching an admission decision.

Central to Ahlia University’s success has been the long-term collaborations it has established with overseas institutions. Since 2004, it has worked with Brunel University London, setting up exchanges for its engineering students who are able to study in London for up to a year. The three-year Brunel PhD Without Residence Programme allows students to graduate with the equivalent to a PhD from Br unel’s campus. ’We are strengthening relations with Brunel with the aim of enlarging our collaborative programme for engineering students.’
Ahlia also collaborates with the George Washington University (GWU) in Washington DC on its Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) programme, which prepares graduates to work in fast-changing, technically oriented organisations, with the final degree issued by GWU.
’We also want to expand undergraduate opportunities,’ says Professor Al-Hawaj, ’and we are doing very well with our French universities.’ Connections with the Institut Superieur de Gestion (ISG) in Paris and Epitech, the Paris Graduate School of Digital Innovation, offer Ahlia’s students project work and hands-on IT experience in the most up-to-date learning environments.
The benefits of the international exchange programme work in two ways. French students attending Ahlia gain a new perspective on their course, and also return with a deeper knowledge of the local culture. ’It is very important that visiting students do not simply study their degree,’ says Professor Al- Hawaj. ’One of the requirements of their coming is that they take two courses, in Arabic language and culture.’ The bespoke, certified courses for visiting students have been created in collaboration with the Bahrain Institute of Technology.
’
Research, by faculty and students, is another area in which international collaboration has benefitted Ahlia’s academic standing. ’One of the factors that QS looked at was the volume and quality of our published research. It was a key reason for our high ranking,’ says Professor Al-Hawaj. The move to the new campus will allow the university to update its online resources, as well as improving research facilities, all of which will enrich the curriculum.
Faculty staff at Ahlia are highly qualified and interact closely with their students. The word ’ahlia’ means ’family’ in Arabic and the emphasis at the university is on forging an open and collaborative relationship between professors and students. Teaching is regularly monitored and examined by the Bahraini government’s Quality Assurance Agency to ensure the highest standards in the classroom and laboratory.
Ahlia University has grown in size and reputation since it welcomed its first undergraduates in 2003. It is a young, outward-looking institution with strong international connections that benefit its students, as well as those visiting the Kingdom. The new campus will consolidate its high standing in the Gulf region and open a new chapter in its drive for excellence and innovation.
